Throughout my degree at Thompson Rivers University, I have developed as a communicator focused on making complex information clear, relevant, and accessible. I have come to realize that communication is not only about the delivery of information, but also about making sure of the proper interpretation of information by different audiences. My work can express ideas in ways that are able to engage with people in real life situations. This portfolio collects written, research-based, and multimedia works to demonstrate the diversity of these forms. Collectively, these works represent the development of the past four years and the skills I have acquired.
One of the strongest skills I have is the ability to engage in audience-centered storytelling, as evidenced in my Sri Lanka flood testimony, in which I concentrated on the creation of emotional connection instead of the presentation of facts. This also helped me sharpen my research skills and analytical communication through the white paper on remote work, in which I had to engage with facts and academic literature to present ideas in the best way possible. This has helped me become proficient in the balancing act between clarity and accuracy. Furthermore, I have also learned to be flexible in terms of communication, as evident from my podcast and Bollywood event designs.
This development aligns with the communications learning outcome, which requires that one be able to communicate effectively in varying contexts. In my podcast, I was able to communicate complex ideas about careers and the future of work in a way that was engaging and easy to understand for my students. This has helped me realize that effective communication boils down to presenting information in ways that are clear and easy to understand without losing its structure and meaning. This has also changed how I approach communication in a personal way.
In the future, I plan to pursue a career in public relations and strategic communication. I foresee myself as a communicator who uses research and storytelling to create informed and accessible work, and this portfolio shows my development, skills, and preparedness to make a professional impact.
